The Benefits of Outsourcing Small Business Names Of Domain and ...

29 Dec 2012

Join the camp and allow that small business of yours increase faster than imaginable by going on line. The on-line industry is extremely large and you should benefit from the possibility to let potential customers find out about your products through the Web. It is best to put up your website and get online while you?re still building your client base because once your customers increase, your online methods will be in place and you can offer interactive solutions that will keep your customers happy. You can actually release your website for free, but there are significant limits to this that will put your online supply to a problem. Many smaller businesses could gain more if they avail of professional site name and web hosting companies. The important characteristics to test are the uptime proportion which will at least be 98% to ensure the least disturbances for your customers and you. When you perform online revenue, it is important to have 24 hour access to your records and 24 hour support for your customers. Some webhost companies can provide you with research as to the number of visitors who visit your site and the number of how many really created a can ask from friends or check online for dependable hosting companies, and compare their companies and pricing. It is also important to have your personal dedicated IP. Once you avail of a free of charge or cheaper web hosting service since the INTERNET protocol address must be shared by other customers or users this isn?t possible. This really is disadvantageous because your accessibility can be slowed down by it on the web. Another significant feature that you need to have is having your own personal domain name, which will be again a limit with free web hosting services. When selecting a domain name, it?s advisable to keep it small, distinct (class) and simple. Check related services and products on the Internet and retain tab of the keywords that make the business in the prime list of the se. It is also beneficial to think just like a buyer and reverse your role and what keywords they could use to find your product. Choosing the right domain name is essential because the Net will check out the keywords that the customer will use within looking and quickly cause the customer to your website if the domain name is encompassing.Having an online website is important because you provide clients a locale to quickly share their problems. You can even use this capability for frequent updates about your goods, offer savings, newsletters, and so on. This can keep your web visitors interested and may possibly build loyalty. There are countless possibilities once you get online together with your company. This is actually the strategy to use and you will be put aside when you don?t benefit from borderless marketing. If you believe you have a good product to market and its potential is promising, start your internet site and avail of trusted domain name and web hosting companies.

Toshiba to show reference design for SDHC card with TransferJet at CES

Toshiba to show reference design for SDHC card with TransferJet at CES

SD cards won't be generating the same feverish hype as other gear breaking cover at CES, but nevertheless, Toshiba's let the world know it'll be bringing a new one to the show. The company won't have a finished product to flog, but instead will be exhibiting a reference design for an SDHC card with TransferJet technology. For those unfamiliar with TransferJet, it's a high-speed wireless transfer technology for sending and receiving files over short distances. While it isn't used nearly as much as its transfer protocol peers, hopefully it'll find some work to do if and when Toshiba takes its card from design to product.

How to Audit Your Furnace

How to Audit Your FurnaceAre you in a long-distance relationship with your furnace? Do you know what it's up to when you're not home? Save money and become more energy efficient with these furnace tips provided by users at Q&A site Stack Exchange.

Jay Bazuzi Asks:

I want to keep track of when my furnace is on, with an eye to reducing how much energy I use to heat my house.

Reasons for wanting to do this:

I could compare it with weather data (temperature, wind speed, precipitation).

I could see what it saves to turn the heat down when we're out.

I could tell my kids exactly how much it costs when they leave the front door open.

How might I go about this?

Doresoom Answers:

You could mount a wind speed logger in your ductwork or in front of your air intake vent. It should have negligible drag effects on airflow through the system. I'm not sure how accurate the results would be though. The air movement from your furnace running is going to be a lot less than outside wind levels, which is what most wind speed loggers are actually designed for.

You can pick one up on Amazon for about $100.

Or you could go the direct approach with a breaker-installed power use monitor. This option's about twice the price, but monitors your whole house. Unfortunately, this method won't tell you exactly when your furnace comes on, although you should be able to figure it out, since it gives you a time history of power usage. Just note when you get a big spike, and then a big drop and match it to when your furnace turns on and off. Then look for that same magnitude spike in later data, without bothering to manually keep track of furnace cycling.

blalor Answers:

I have an ancient oil-fired steam boiler with a "tankless" hot water heater. I built an Arduino-based board that connects in parallel to the thermostat wires at the furnace. It uses a MID400 AC optocoupler to detect when the thermostat is calling for heat (24VAC when not calling for heat, 0VAC when it is), and then sends that to a computer via an XBee module.

From that you can keep track of how long the furnace runs. It's a very simple system with several shortcomings: It doesn't make a distinction between when the main zone of the house is calling for heat vs when hot water is called for, and can't tell when heat's being called for, but it can tell you when the low water or high temperature cut-outs have kicked in.

Not perfect, but it should give you some idea of your energy consumption.

shirlock homes Answers:

If you need to monitor just the furnace (what kind of furnace?), a very simple Amprobe chart recorder will do the job by monitoring the electrical inputs to the burner or pumps without any invasive wiring or computer interface. Old fashioned, but used in industrial applications for decades.

SamtheBrand Answers:

The Hohm power monitoring service used to be a great way to keep tabs on energy consumption (check out BQ's awesome answer), but in mid 2011 Microsoft discontinued it just as Google discontinued its competing service, Powermeter.

But while the tech giants seem to have abandoned home energy monitoring, several smaller players now offer similar services:

myEragy: A free web-based energy consumption dashboard that provides subscribers with real time, historical and projected info and sends alerts via email or SMS when you go overbudget or a specific circuit uses too much energy. myEragy supports several electricity monitors, including Blueline PowerCost Monitor with WiFi, TED 5000, and eGauge.

PlotWatt: Currently in beta, PlotWatt is a free service that plots energy usage in a user-friendly way, and according to the FAQ, tracks individual appliances using "algorithms." Suspicious, certainly, but promising. The service is compatible with TED and WattVisions monitors.

There are also more integrated options out there, such as Opower & Honeywell's thermostat product, which lets you adjust and monitor your thermostat from anywhere, and MyEnergy, which lets customers track electric, gas and water.

It's an exciting space out there with a lot of promising options. This is just a start.

The Sun News Tragic fate of Nigerian artistes

By SEGUN AJAYI

Died wretched, buried with a million naira casket is the saga of a rich fool in a home video entitled, Died Wretched. The flick produced by one of Nollywood?s pioneer producers, Chief Kenneth Nnebue of NEK Videos captures the folly of a young but rich man who watched his uncle and mentor die in penury but turned around to throw a lavish funeral for him.

The above scenario has been the lot of many Nigerian artistes who often die in poverty after giving all they have to their fatherland. Many actors, most especially, the veterans seem to suffer this fate. Legendary playwright, William Shakespeare in his classic, Macbeth describes this set of people, as ?poor players who strut and fret their hours upon the stage, and were heard no more?. This is pitiable because these actors toil to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians but at the end of the day, have little to show for it. In a country where corruption thrives, the inspirational line in the national anthem that says, ?the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain? is inconsequential. The case of top actor, Enebeli Elebuwa of ?Andrew must check out? fame brings to mind how a nation dumps her heroes when they are needed most.

Here was an actor who inspired patriotism by urging Nigerians to stay back home and salvage the country only to be devoured by the very system he laboured to preserve. Although, ?Andrew? refused to check out in his prime, cruel fate eventually showed him the exit door. For several months, Elebuwa was bedridden and incapacitated by stroke in Lagos. In spite of several appeals for financial assistance to enable the ailing actor seek better treatment overseas; help was not forthcoming.

His continued battle with the debilitating ailment took him to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, from where he was eventually flown to India where he died a few weeks ago. Elebuwa?s death was a culmination of a nation?s insensitivity to the plight of her patriots. Another sad story of a country?s penchant for trifling with the lives of its heroes was that of late James Iroha aka Gringory of the rested TV comedy series, the New Masquerade. Early in the year, Iroha, 71, died in his village, Amaokwe Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State after repeated calls for financial assistance were unheeded by government.

His demise only reaffirmed that members of the creative community have become endangered species in contemporary Nigeria. Iroha, who created and directed the TV drama that ran for several years on national television, incidentally was the third among the major cast to pay the supreme price lately. Before then, Claudius Eke, (Jegede Sokoya) and his cantankerous wife, Apena (Christy Essien Igbokwe), died in 2006 and 2011 respectively. While Eke died of chronic diabetes, the acclaimed lady of songs passed away after a brief illness.

Even though, the likes of Iroha, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Sam Loco Efe and Wale Ogunyemi were decorated with national honours, the awards did not put food on their tables. Chief Chika Okpalla popularly known as Chief Zebrudaya Okoroigwe Nwogbo alias 4.30, also of the New Masquerade fame, a garrulous individual, famous for his clumsy grammar, in his appraisal of his national honour once told The Sun in an interview: ?I?m MON without the EY?. The tragic fate of some of Nigeria?s creative talents brings to the fore some nagging questions: What are the lives of Nigerian artistes actually worth? Are they only good for airport receptions, entertainment of guests at social functions, and after that heard no more? TS Weekend recalls the sordid tales of some stars of yesteryears who died in distress.

They include Joe Layode aka Mr. Garuba of the Village Headmaster fame, Wale Ogunyemi, renowned playwright and dramatist, James Iroha aka Gringory, veteran actor, Sam Loco-Efe, actress, Remi Abiola, Laide Adewale, Francis Agu, and Pati Obasi among others.

Excerpts:

James Iroha (Gringory) Shortly before his death in February this year, James Iroha had sent a save-our-soul to Nigerians over his health and financial conditions. The newspapers were awash with stories of his deteriorating health and his inability to pay his medical bills. At the time, the 1966 graduate of the University of Ibadan was visually impaired. He needed to undergo operations for glaucoma affliction but help did not come. Iroha, who alongside Clarus (who is also currently visually impaired) entertained Nigerians with their roles as clumsy house-helps in Chief Zebrudaya?s house in The New Masquerade, was denied help by Nigerians. In spite of his many cries, nobody cared a hoot. He once told reporters:??There?s nothing between poverty and I; I?m nose-to-nose with poverty?.? Iroha eventually died unsung in his hometown, Item, Abia State. Claudius Eke (Jegede Sokoya) As if the New Masquerade cast were plagued by despicable fate, Iroha?s acolyte and support cast in the popular TV series, Eke, succumbed to chronic diabetes some years back. Like his compatriot, Eke was literally living from hand to mouth in his later years. Following the resting the New Masquerade, which gave him fame without cash, Eke?s calls for help when he took ill got no response until his death.

Joe Layode (Garuba) Until his death on December 9, 2006, at 78, Joe Layode aka Garuba of the Village Headmaster fame ruled the airwaves like a colossus in the ?70s and ?80s. However,?at his old age, the garrulous no-nonsense teacher in Oja Primary School was a recluse. He was holed up in his flat in Iba Housing Estate where he lived with one of his daughters. Although, he told this reporter during an encounter that he engaged in script writing and rendered consultancy services to younger artistes, the jobs were inadequate to put food on his table. In order to put body and soul together, Garuba joined the home video bandwagon, which saw him featuring in flicks like King of Money, Oracle, and Sango. From all indications, Layode was embittered by the nation he once gave his all.?He hardly interacted with neighbours and if he had cause to go out, he did that under the cover of darkness.

He would not even open his door for journalists if only to underscore his resentment for the society and its people. Layode finally gave up the ghost in December 2006 and was buried without fanfare. Wale Ogunyemi (MON) Award-winning playwright and actor, Wale Ogunyemi broke into television in the ?70s with plays like The Vow, Are Akogun (a Yoruba adaptation of William Shakespeare?s Macbeth) (1969), Ijaye War (1970), Kiriji War, and The Divorce (1977). Ogunyemi, who was born in Igbajo, Osun State in 1939, will always be remembered for writing Langbodo, Nigeria?s drama entry for FECTAC 77.?At the time he appeared in Professor Wole Soyinka?s King Baabu, little did he know that his ailing health could not sustain a world tour of the political drama. He took ill shortly after and died on December 2001 after a brief illness. He was 62.

Sam Loco

Efe Sam Loco shot into the limelight way back in 1977 when he played the lead role, Akaraogun, in Wale Ogunyemi?s Langbodo. Renowned theatre scholar and director, Professor Dapo Adelugba, directed the drama. The performance was adjudged the best during the festival. Although, Sam was listed in Nigeria?s Movie Hall of Fame and bagged a national award, but typical of such honours, they lack financial backing. Sam Loco-Efe,?who died at 69, only breathed the air of financial freedom with the boom of Nollywood. But what measure of success could be ascribed to a composite artiste who for four decades bestrode Nigeria?s entertainment landscape like a colossus? Sam Loco?s fame and popularity not withstanding, he died a struggling man last year. He was shooting a film in Owerri, Imo State when he slumped and died in a hotel room. Harry Mosco The death of pop legend, Harry Mosco on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in Egypt where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment came on the heels of the demise of James Iroha.

Meanwhile, his passage differed slightly from those of his colleagues considering the circumstances. Although, distraught at the latter part of his life, Mosco who led the wave-making Funkies Band in the ?70s and ?80s, was heart-broken when his heartthrob, Edugie dumped him for renowned politician and businessman, Arthur Nzeribe. The musician never recovered from the shock as he was literally pronounced dead long before his death.

However, his career had started witnessing a downturn by the time the politician came into the picture. Deserted and lonely, Mosco?s life came crashing when he could not send his kids to school which left him with no option than to allow his estranged wife take custody of the children. He was reportedly shattered by the trend of events such that attempts to re-launch his music career failed.?The Sugarcane Baby and Country Boy singer, who was resident in Akute, a border community between Lagos and?Ogun States, fell ill before help came through his son who flew him to Cairo, Egypt, for treatment where he died. Remi Abiola Her name gave her away as one of the many wives of the business mogul,?the late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

She was a popular face in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood, notably for her motherly roles. The mother of one who lived in Jakande Estate, Ipaja, Lagos State, before she relocated to the United States in 2008 reportedly died of lung cancer on July 29, of the following year. She was aged 56. Perhaps, if Nigeria had smiled on the talented actress, she wouldn?t have relocated to the US at the time she did. Abiola had to square up to the challenges of settling down to a new life as an immigrant, which compelled her to take up a menial job. She was at work when she slumped and went into coma. The actress was rushed to the hospital but she did not make it.

Francis Agu Prior to his death on March 20, 2007, Francis Agu, a suave actor, belonged to the first generation of Nollywood actors who made their marks in the industry. He, alongside the likes Kanayo O. Kanayo (KOK), Kenneth Okonkwo, Charles Okafor, and Bob-Manuel Udokwu?featured in Living In Bondage, the chart buster movie produced by Chief Kenneth Nnebue in the early 1990s. Before then, he was a popular face on Checkmate, a famous sit-com produced by Amaka Igwe also in the early 1990s. Agu suddenly disappeared from the scene at the turn the century only for his fans to learn about his ailing health later. Initially, he was hospitalised in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. Unfortunately, his health condition did not attract any noise such as to attract financial assistance for better medical treatment.

By the time he was transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 2006, his condition had worsened. With little financial aid forthcoming, the actor eventually passed away in 2007.

Pati Obasi Remember him? Pati Obasi of the Mammy Water fame. For sometime the gospel singer has been down with renal failure without help coming from nowhere. He passed away last month in Enugu and he?s yet to be buried. Davies Ofor and James Uche It is not enough to roll out the drums after these stars are gone when much can be done while they are alive. Iroha?s screen partner, Davies Ofor (Clarus) has been blind for 10 years in Aba, Abia State. Another?actor, Prince James Uche, has been bedridden for more than a year also in Abia State. Isn?t it time for the Abia State government and public-spirited Nigerians to come to their aid and save their lives?

Secret files lift lid on Thatcher-Reagan Falklands contacts

LONDON (Reuters) - Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher wrote an emotional letter to U.S. President Ronald Reagan during the 1982 Falklands War calling him the "only person" who could understand her position, formerly secret documents showed on Friday.

Newly declassified files from 1982 lift the lid on contacts between the two leaders over the crisis and reveal the extent of the pressure Thatcher felt she was under when Argentina invaded the remote South Atlantic archipelago to reclaim what it said was its sovereign territory, triggering a 10-week war.

In one file, the tough, outspoken Thatcher called the build-up to the Argentine invasion the "worst, I think of my life", while letters to Reagan from the time show her reliance on the U.S. president and their close working relationship.

"I am writing to you separately because I think you are the only person who will understand the significance of what I am trying to say," Thatcher told Reagan in one letter, saying the principles of democracy, liberty and justice were at stake.

Britain held its breath when Thatcher dispatched a naval task force to the British-ruled Falkland islands following the Argentine invasion. Despite losing several warships, the British eventually reclaimed the South Atlantic islands 74 days later. Some 649 Argentines and 255 British troops were killed.

Elsewhere, the files show that Thatcher stressed the special relationship between the two countries as she requested Reagan's help in a letter signed off with "Warm personal regards, Margaret".

"I also believe that the friendship between the United States and Britain matters very much to the future of the free world," she wrote.

The files provide a unique perspective on the first and only female British prime minister's personal feelings as she waged war against Argentina, contemporary records specialist Simon Demissie told Reuters.

"You really hear how personally strained she was, how surprised she was. Her voice really comes through - her sense of shock that she would have to send forces to the other side of the world," Demissie said.

"We get a sense that she is as decisive as ever and that is something which really appealed to the military officials close to her," Demissie said in reference to minutes from the War Cabinet meetings ahead of the crisis, which were also released on Friday.

CLANDESTINE HELP

Secret for 30 years, the files reveal Thatcher's political manoeuvring during other events in 1982, including the Iran-Iraq war, the imposition of military rule in Poland and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

They also show that British attitudes to its U.S. ally were less deferential than the prime minister's letters to Reagan suggest.

In a transcript of a telephone conversation between Thatcher and her foreign minister, the prime minister criticised Reagan's communication style, describing a message from the president as "so vague I didn't think it was worth reading when it came in at half-eleven last night".

In another file, she noted "the US just does not realise the resentment she is causing in the Middle East", while a Foreign Office briefing on Reagan described the actor-turned-politician as "knowing much less than he seems to".

However, one document showed how deeply indebted British officials felt to the United States for its "clandestine help" during the Falklands war; help that the United States was anxious be kept secret.

"The US have made it clear that they do not wish to reveal publicly the extent of the help with which they are providing us. They are very much worried about the effects on their relations with South America. We must accept this as a fact of life," a Ministry of Defence letter said.

The United States assisted Britain with intelligence and communications facilities as well as with military equipment such as munitions, the document said, confirming information already in the public domain.

Emblazoned with the words SECRET and CONFIDENTIAL, many of the 6,000 declassified files will prove a treasure trove for history students keen on ferreting out hitherto unknown details of the major political events of 1982, said records specialist Demissie.

"Everything comes out in the end," he said.

Manning, Peterson?make Pro Bowl

Robert Griffin III also Pro-Bowl bound after standout rookie season

Peyton Manning (L)?and Adrian Peterson capped their comeback seasons with Pro Bowl nods.

By BARRY WILNER

updated 7:51 p.m. ET Dec. 26, 2012

NEW YORK - Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson want to cap their sensational comebacks with Super Bowl appearances. For now, they can be proud of Pro Bowl spots.

So can Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, one of two rookies chosen Wednesday for the Jan. 27 NFL all-star game.

Manning missed all of the 2011 season with neck and back problems that required several operations. He then signed with Denver as a free agent and has led the Broncos on a 10-game winning streak to take the AFC West.

"I know there's great players out there in the NFL, but there's some great players on this team this year that deserve to go," said Manning, whose 12th Pro Bowl is a record for quarterbacks. He ranks fourth in league passing this year, has thrown 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Four other Broncos made the AFC roster: DE Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Von Miller, CB Champ Bailey and tackle Ryan Clady. Bailey's 12th appearance is a record for defensive backs.

"My goal has always been to go out and help the team win and play at a high level," Manning added. "Anything that comes along with that, like being honored as a Pro Bowl selection, is very humbling."

Minnesota's Peterson tore up his left knee on Christmas Eve last year, underwent major surgery, then was back for the season opener. He's gone from uncertain to unstoppable, running away with the rushing title with a career-high 1,898 yards and lifting the Vikings toward an NFC wild card.

"Coming into the season after going through the rehab process, I just told myself that I wanted to lead my team to a championship and make sure that I contribute and do my part," Peterson said. "I've been doing it."

Griffin is one of three rookie QBs who had superb debut seasons, along with Andrew Luck of Indianapolis and Russell Wilson of Seattle. Luck and Wilson weren't voted to the Pro Bowl by players, coaches and fans, although their teams are in the playoffs; Griffin can get to the postseason if Washington beats Dallas on Sunday.

"You can't play down those kind of things," Griffin said. "I've always said my whole football career that you don't play for awards. They just come. You don't say you're going to win the Heisman. You don't say you're going to win MVP. You go out and you prove it on the field, and if everyone feels that way then they'll give you that award."

San Francisco had the most players selected, nine, including six from its second-ranked defense. Houston was next with eight, six on offense.

Kansas City, despite its 2-13 record that is tied with Jacksonville for worst in the league, had five Pro Bowlers, including RB Jamaal Charles, who like Peterson is coming back from a torn ACL.
One other rookie, Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh, was chosen. Walsh has nine field goals of at least 50 yards, an NFL mark.

The AFC kicker is at the other end of the spectrum: Cleveland's Phil Dawson earned his first selection in his 14th NFL season.

"I deliberately tried not to know," Dawson said. "We wanted to watch the show with my kids. I had a really good idea what was going on, but it was a pretty priceless moment when we saw the name flash up on the screen. My kids went nuts `cause my wife went nuts. That makes these 15 years of waiting worth it."

Another record setter will be heading to Honolulu: Detroit WR Calvin Johnson.

Johnson broke Jerry Rice's single-season yards receiving record and has 1,892 yards with a game left.

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez set the record for Pro Bowls at his position by being chosen for the 13th time.

The league's top two sackmasters, DEs Aldon Smith of San Francisco and J.J. Watt of Houston, were first-time selections. Watt has 20 1-2 sacks, one ahead of Smith; the NFL record is 22 1-2.

Other newcomers, along with Griffin, Walsh and Dawson, were AFC players tackle Duane Brown and guard Wade Smith of Houston; safety LaRon Landry of the Jets; kick returner Jacoby Jones of Baltimore; and punter Dustin Colquitt of Kansas City.

For the NFC, first-timers were Giants WR Victor Cruz; Atlanta WR Julio Jones; Seattle tackle Russell Okung and center Max Unger; San Francisco guard Mike Iupati, linebacker NaVorro Bowman and safety Donte Whitner; Chicago cornerback Tim Jennings and defensive tackle Henry Melton; Washington tackle Trent Williams and special teamer Lorenzo Alexander; Minnesota fullback Jerome Felton; Tampa Bay DT Gerald McCoy; and New Orleans punter Thomas Morstead.

Eight teams had no Pro Bowl players: Carolina, Philadelphia and St. Louis in the NFC, Tennessee, Buffalo, Jacksonville, San Diego and Oakland in the AFC.

GOP Approval Ratings Plummet After 'Plan B ... - Business Insider

AP

Americans' previous bright outlook on leaders resolving the year-end fiscal cliff has plunged in recent days, and a new Gallup poll suggests?that they place most of their early blame on Republican leaders in Congress.

Only 26 percent of voters approve of the job Congressional Republicans are doing in handling fiscal cliff negotiations, down 3 percent from a week ago. At the same time, President Barack Obama's approval rating on the fiscal cliff has soared from 48 percent a week ago to 54 percent today.

Only 50 percent of respondents think that there will be some kind of deal in the final few days to avert the cliff. Forty-eight percent now think that the U.S. will go over the cliff.

Americans' optimism on that question has plummeted 15 points in the past week. Here's a look:

Gallup

The poll follows the failure last week of House Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B,"?which failed to garner enough Republican support to earn a floor vote last week.

The Gallup survey also follows the overall trend of fiscal cliff polling, which has not looked good for Republicans. In a Quinnipiac poll taken two weeks ago, more voters said they would blame Republicans by a 53-27 margin.

Fees undermine fliers' ability to compare fares

(AP) ? For many passengers, air travel is only about finding the cheapest fare.

But as airlines offer a proliferating list of add-on services, from early boarding to premium seating and baggage fees, the ability to comparison-shop for the lowest total fare is eroding.

Global distribution systems that supply flight and fare data to travel agents and online ticketing services like Orbitz and Expedia, accounting for half of all U.S. airline tickets, complain that airlines won't provide fee information in a way that lets them make it handy for consumers trying to find the best deal.

"What other industry can you think of where a person buying a product doesn't know how much it's going to cost even after he's done at the checkout counter?" said Simon Gros, chairman of the Travel Technology Association, which represents the global distribution services and online travel industries.

The harder airlines make it for consumers to compare, "the greater opportunity you have to get to higher prices," said Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, whose members include corporate travel managers.

Now the Obama administration is wading into the issue. The Department of Transportation is considering whether to require airlines to provide fee information to everyone with whom they have agreements to sell their tickets. A decision originally scheduled for next month has been postponed to May, as regulators struggle with a deluge of information from airlines opposed to regulating fee information, and from the travel industry and consumer groups that support such a requirement.

Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines ? with backing from industry trade associations ? are asking the Supreme Court to reverse an appeals court ruling forcing them to include taxes in their advertised fares. The appeals court upheld a Transportation Department rule that went in effect nearly a year ago that ended airlines' leeway to advertise a base airfare and show the taxes separately, often in smaller print. Airlines say the regulations violate their free-speech rights.

At the heart of the debate is a desire by airlines to move to a new marketing model in which customers don't buy tickets based on price alone. Instead, following the well-worn path of other consumer companies, airlines want to mine personal data about customers in order to sell them tailored services. You like to sit on the aisle and to ski, so how would you like to fly to Aspen with an aisle seat and a movie, no extra baggage charge for your skis, and have a hotel room and a pair of lift tickets waiting for you, all for one price? You're a frequent business traveler. How about priority boarding, extra legroom, Internet access and a rental car when you arrive?

"Technology is changing rapidly. We are going to be part of the change," said Sharon Pinkerton, vice president of Airlines for America, which represents most U.S. carriers. "We want to be able to offer our customers a product that's useful to them, that's customized to meet their needs, and we don't think (the Transportation Department) needs to step in."

If airlines have their way, passengers looking for ticket prices may have to reveal a lot more information about themselves, such as their age, marital status, gender, nationality, travel history and whether they're flying for business or leisure. The International Air Transport Association, whose 240 member airlines cover 84 percent of global airline traffic, adopted standards at a meeting earlier this month in Geneva for such information gathering by airlines as well as by travel agents and ticketing services that would relay the data to airlines and receive customized fares in return.

"Airlines want, and expect, their (ticket) distribution partners to offer passengers helpful contextual information to make well-informed purchase decisions, reducing the number of reservations made based primarily or exclusively on price," said a study commissioned by the association.

Consumer advocates question how airlines would safeguard the personal information they gather, and they worry that comparison shopping for the cheapest air fares will no longer be feasible.

"It's like going to a supermarket where before you get the price, they ask you to swipe your driver's license that shows them you live in a rich zip code, you drive a BMW, et cetera," Mitchell said. "All this personal information on you is going out to all these carriers with no controls over what they do with it, who sees it and so on."

The airline association said consumers who choose not to supply personal information would still be able to see fares and purchase tickets, though consumer advocates said those fares would probably be at the "rack rate" ? the travel industry's term for full price, before any discounts.

It's up to individual airlines whether they price fares differently for travelers who don't provide personal information, said Perry Flint, a spokesman for the international airline association.

The stakes, of course, are enormous. Since 2000, U.S. airlines have lost money for more years than they've made profits. Fee revenue has made a big difference in their bottom lines. Globally, airlines raked in an estimated $36 billion this year in ancillary revenue, which includes baggage fees and other a la carte services as well as sales of frequent flyer points and commissions on hotel bookings, according to a study by Amadeus, a global distribution service, and the IdeaWorksCompany, a U.S. firm that helps airlines raise ancillary revenue. U.S. airlines reported collecting nearly $3.4 billion in baggage fees alone in 2011.

One expense airlines would like to eliminate is the $7 billion a year they pay global distribution systems to supply flight and fare information to travel agents and online booking agents like Expedia. Airlines want to deal more directly with online ticket sellers and travel agents, who dominate the lucrative business travel market. Justice Department officials have acknowledged an investigation is underway into possible anti-trust violations by distribution companies.

Airlines also have been cracking down on websites that help travelers manage their frequent flier accounts. The sites use travelers' frequent flier passwords to obtain balances and mileage expiration dates, and then display the information in a way that makes it easier for travelers to figure out when it makes more sense to buy a ticket or to use miles.

"What the airlines are trying to do right now is reinvent the wheel so they can hold all their information close to their chest," said Charles Leocha, founder of the Consumer Travel Alliance. "As we move forward in a world of IT, the ownership of passenger data is like gold to these people."

By withholding information like fee prices, he said, "we are forced to go see them, and then we are spoon-fed what they want to feed us."

Drought's winter toll: Mississippi barges face losses while US blasts river

Traffic along 180 miles of the drought-stricken Mississippi will be curtailed for a month, at a cost of billions to the barging industry, to allow the US to blast rock formations and raise river levels.

Even in winter, the severe drought that plagued a great swath of the nation?s agricultural and ranching states this summer is taking a punishing toll on the nation?s economy, with the Mississippi River barging industry the latest sector to fall victim.

With water levels in the river already dangerously low and continuing to fall, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Coast Guard embarked Tuesday on a month-long program to increase water flow and ease navigation, during which barge traffic will be severely curtailed on a 180-mile stretch of river. Barging industry officials say they expect about $7 billion in losses through the end of January as a result.

The Obama administration announced the project on Monday, saying the Corps and the Guard planned to blast massive rock formations in shipping channels along a 15-mile stretch near Thebes, Ill., about 128 miles south of St. Louis. The agencies also say they will release new water from reservoirs connected to the Carlyle River in southern Illinois.

In total, the $10 million project is expected to add about six inches of water depth to the Mississippi by next week, the Corps says.

?Every inch counts right now. It?s not a permanent fix. But we?re using every tool at our disposal to keep commerce moving,? says Mike Peterson, a Corps spokesman.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois, at a press conference in nearby Alton, Ill., said Monday that his office is tracking efforts with the Corps ?to ensure we are doing everything we can to keep traffic moving on the river.?

?From farms to coal mines, a great deal of Illinois? economy depends on the Mississippi,? he said.

While the river will not be completely shut down to barge traffic during the month-long project, it will not allow passage during daytime hours, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Vessels will be allowed to pass on a first-come, first-served basis arranged by the Coast Guard.

The barging industry says the efforts are not enough to increase both the water flow and depth that are needed to return the Mississippi to pre-drought levels. They have repeatedly urged the Corps to open up a reservoir system connected to the Missouri River to release at least 2 percent of its water, which is needed to compensate for river flows that are becoming ?shallower and narrower? by the day, says Ann McCulloch, a spokeswoman with the American Waterways Operators, an advocacy organization in Washington.

?We are very grateful the Corps is expediting rock removal work. That is very important, but if it happens without a modest amount of flow from the Missouri River, we feel that work is not going to be enough to maintain navigation,? Ms. McCulloch says. Since August, she adds, barges that under normal conditions are meant to navigate with a 12-foot ?draft? have been operating with a 9-foot draft, which is likely to decrease without the added flow.

The draft is a measurement used to determine the minimum depth of water needed for vessels to operate safely with and without cargo.

?When that channel becomes lower and lower, the Corps will place restrictions on how much barges can carry, and when you get below nine feet, the river might as well be closed, because there?s not much that will be able to move,? she says.

Mr. Peterson says the decision to keep the Missouri River reservoir system closed to the Mississippi is one of the ?tough decisions? the agency makes in determining the best use of its water sources. He adds that the decision is based on the long-term forecast that the drought may not be an isolated event and could stretch forward for years.

"Right now this is year one in what we are looking at as a multi-year event,? he says. ?We want to make sure every decision we make now won?t have long-term negative impact for people who rely on the Missouri River system for their drinking water and hydro power.?

The American Waterways Operators estimates that the partial shutdown of the river will reduce the number of barges from 35 to 15 that can be hauled by a single towboat. The reduced speed and capacity along the 180-mile stretch of the river between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill., which has water levels already 20 feet below normal, will result in $7 billion in lost business in December and January, the organization says.

It says over a third of those losses, or $2.3 billion, is represented by farm exports. Other expected losses are from chemical products ($1.8 billion), petroleum products ($1.3 billion), crude oil ($534 million), and coal ($192 million).

London Business School Releases Strong Employment Statistics ...

Ninety-two percent of the most recent class of MBA graduates from London Business School (LBS) found employment within three months of graduation, according to the school?s latest MBA employment report, released last week.

For the first time ever, the largest number of graduates (35 percent) took jobs in the corporate sector. Consulting came in second, with 33 percent of students accepting roles in that sector, followed closely by finance, which drew 32 percent of graduates. LBS also reported that all of its 2013 graduates secured internships over the summer months.

?It?s great to see that, despite another tough year in the job market, our students remain highly sought after,? Fiona Sandford, LBS executive director for careers and global business, said in a statement. ?Testament to the international mobility and global perspective of our students, this year we?ve seen record numbers of students heading outside the UK following graduation, with 53 percent choosing to work abroad,? she added.

LBS this year introduced new components to its MBA program designed to enhance its global nature. In September, the school launched the inaugural Global Business Experience, an immersion program through which faculty and students will have the opportunity to experience working environments in one of five global locations ? New York and Boston, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and Istanbul. ?The idea is that by the end of their time here at London Business School, students will be able to do business anywhere in the world,? Sandford said.

How white dwarfs mimic black holes

Dec. 17, 2012 ? A remarkable observation by astronomers from the University of Southampton, Professor Phil Charles, Professor Malcolm Coe and postgraduate student Liz Bartlett, has appeared in The Astrophysical Journal.

The Southampton Physics and Astronomy team are part of a global collaboration -- with colleagues in Taiwan, South Africa, Poland, Australia and Italy -- that has revealed that bright X-ray flares in nearby galaxies, once assumed to indicate the presence of black holes, can in fact be produced by white dwarfs.

They made the discovery by detecting a dramatic, short-lived X-ray flare that was picked up by an X-ray telescope on the International Space Station.

Using optical telescopes in South Africa and Chile, the Southampton astronomers showed that the flare, called XRF111111 as it happened on 11 November, 2011, was located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. These Magellanic Clouds are between 160,000 and 200,000 light years away and are the nearest satellite galaxies to the Milky Way. They are visible to the naked eye from the Southern Hemisphere.

The flare from XRF111111 was so luminous that astronomers initially thought it was likely to be a black hole producing X-rays but further research by Phil and his team revealed that its X-ray temperature was so low that it had to be a white dwarf instead.

White dwarfs are very common, burnt-out cinders of normal stars like the Sun that are typically about one solar mass but are contained in a volume no bigger than Earth.

However, white dwarfs were not considered capable of producing such a huge X-ray flash but the optical observations in South Africa and Chile showed that the white dwarf was orbiting a hot B star -- a normal star about 10 times the mass of our Sun that is much hotter and brighter. This was something that had only been seen twice previously and both times with much lower X-ray luminosities.

Research by Professor Charles and his team revealed that material was probably collecting on the surface of the white dwarf from the B star and eventually underwent runaway thermonuclear burning that was seen on Earth as a nova explosion.

Professor Charles says: "Our observations show that the thermonuclear burning probably caused a shell of matter to be ejected from around the white dwarf and when the shell hit the hot wind of the B star it produced a huge shock leading to the X-ray flash that was seen on the International Space Station.

"We think that this incredible X-ray flash was not due to accretion onto a black hole but was instead due to a nova explosion on a white dwarf that took place close to a hot massive star. This was something that we, as astronomers, have never seen before.

"This surprising result shows that, in the right circumstances, white dwarfs are capable of mimicking black holes, the most luminous objects we know of."

NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel Is - Business Insider

Turkish media is reporting that veteran journalist Richard Engel, NBC's chief foreign correspondent and Middle East bureau chief, and his Turkish colleague Aziz Akyava? are currently missing in Syria.?

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reports that Engel and Akyava? haven't been in contact with NBC News since Thursday morning.

John Cook of Gawker reports that NBC has been "asking every reporter who inquires about the pair to participate in a news blackout," but the Turkish reports have already been referenced by journalists and others thousands of times on Twitter.

Prominent investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill argues that NBC's news blackout should be respected, although the news has been picked up by outlets including The Daily Mail, The Houston Chronicle, and The Atlantic Wire:

Turkish news channel NTV notes that Turkish journalists who have been arrested and detained in Syria do not have any information about the journalists' whereabouts.

[UPDATE 4:50 p.m.] John Cook at Gawker has published a response to readers wondering why Gawker decided to publish their post against NBC News' wishes:

The rationale for the blackout was offered in off-the-record conversations, so I can't present their argument here. But I will say this: No one told me anything that indicated a specific, or even general, threat to Engel's safety. No one said, "If you report this, then we know, or suspect, that X, Y, or Z may happen." It was infinitely more vague and general than that.

As I wrote in the post, when the New York Times maintained a blackout about David Rohde, the rationale was clear: I was directly told that the Times had reason to believe that the people who had Rohde would harm him if news got out. There was nothing approaching that level of specificity or argumentation here. I would not have written a post if someone had told me that there was a reasonable or even remote suspicion that anything specific would happen if I wrote the post.

Also: There was in practice no blackout. Xinhua and Breitbart had published English language accounts. There were probably like 100 posts to Twitter per minute about him. This was a situation where the information was freely available on the internet, and in the region?these are large Turkish outlets reporting this information. It was out.
