All New Viber: Cross-Platform Monster for Consumers

Some of you might know Viber already and that they are ?now also providing a solution for Windows and Mac based workstations. For everyone else here is a quick introduction to Viber:

What is Viber?

Viber is a cross-platform VoIP solution for consumers developed by Viber Media Inc. It was first introduced to iOS in December 2010. Since then they have been increasing support for other smartphone platforms such as Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Nokia Symbian and Samsung Bada. Their app does not cost anything but the initial registration requires a SMS to be send for validating your phone number.

What?s new?

On May 7, 2013 Viber released software clients for Windows and Mac. So you are able to install the application on your computer or notebook and register with your phone number to synchronise contacts. When you are logged in with both your smartphone and a desktop client at the same time you can move any active call to the other device.

Features

So what value does it add to your unified communications environment? Here are some of the new (and some old) features that might come in handy:

Positioning

The Viber solution is clearly positioned in the consumer market and gained wide popularity among users in that category. So far I have not come across enterprises utilising Viber as part of their unified communications strategy. If you are using Viber for professional purposes please feel invited to share your experiences in the comment section below.

Competition

As the Facebook Chat app is currently tested for possible VoIP features and beta tested, Viber seeks to increase their solution portfolio to maintain market share and this release seems to be the result of that. Other in-direct competitors of consumer-based unified communication tools are solutions such as WhatsApp for instant messaging and Skype for video conferencing.

Possible Business Usage

If you and your social network connections list their smartphone number along with the social profile, and install the apps of such on their smartphone they will see each other on Viber. Being completely?synchronised? they will be able to communicate via VoIP, video conference or instant message beyond their enterprises unified communications abilities. This should serve for non-critical communication only though, as consumer solutions might not be sufficient to match your organisations IT security policies.

Garcetti holds slim lead as L.A. picks new mayor

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Councilman Eric Garcetti held a slender edge Tuesday in early returns over city Controller Wendy Greuel to become the next Los Angeles mayor, while slow-coming returns suggested it could take a day or more until a winner emerges.

The preliminary numbers pegged Garcetti at 52 percent and Greuel at 48 percent, with about 6,100 votes separating them out of about 176,000 counted so far. The tally included about 25 percent of precincts, along with mail ballots.

"No one said it was going to be easy or quick," Greuel told a crowd of supporters as votes were being counted. "When you're playing in the championship of LA politics, sometimes the game goes into overtime."

Despite record spending, turnout at polls appeared sluggish after a campaign that centered on the city's ailing economy and budget and the influence of municipal unions.

The two City Hall regulars failed to bring much sparkle to the contest to succeed Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who exits office July 1 after two up-and-down terms.

Only one of four voters in the nation's second-most populous city were projected to cast a ballot, possibly a historic low in a city known to shrug at local politics.

The tightness of the race between the two Democrats suggested it could take days to count all the ballots.

Garcetti, 42, a city councilman who could become the city's first elected Jewish mayor, and Greuel, 51, who could become the first woman to hold the job, occupy so much of the same policy turf they've been dubbed "Greucetti."

A steady stream of negative advertising from the campaigns and outside groups has helped obscure the candidates' promises about free-flowing traffic, new jobs and better schools in coming years.

Voters also were judging three competing ballot proposals to manage the city's proliferation of pot shops, forcing residents to weigh the needs of the sick against complaints about crime around the dispensaries.

While some cities successfully managed pot collectives, Los Angeles fumbled and dispensaries sprouted across the city. Proposition D would cap the number at 135 ? the total that opened prior to 2007 ? and raise taxes slightly; Proposition E would cap the number at the same level but raise no new taxes; Proposition F wouldn't limit the number of pot shops but would put stringent controls such as audits and background checks on employees while also raising taxes.

The proposition with the most votes wins ? if it collects a majority. If none of the measures receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the issue could bounce back to the City Council.

Greuel and Garcetti emerged from a March primary in which no candidate secured the majority needed to win outright, leading to Tuesday's runoff. Only about two in 10 voters went to the polls in that race.

The mayoral contest has seen record spending ? over $30 million overall ? and the outcome was expected to swing on appeal with key voting groups, including blacks, Latinos and older whites, and turnout in the San Fernando Valley, South Los Angeles and other battleground neighborhoods.

On Monday, Greuel sent off a final round of recorded endorsements from former President Bill Clinton, in whose administration she once worked, while Garcetti was on campaign stops arguing a simple point to mostly indifferent residents: The election matters.

While Garcetti could become the first Jewish man elected mayor, he would not be the first Jew to hold the job. Bernard Cohn was mayor briefly in 1878, after being appointed to fill a vacancy.

The pace of activity at one Silver Lake polling place was slow. Voters faced no wait for booths at midday.

"I voted for Wendy Greuel," said Chris Johnson, 31, a college employee. "And I voted for her largely because of Bill Clinton's endorsement of her."

Voter Angela Beltran, a nonprofit research analyst, said the choice was not a gender issue.

"It was more a matter of who has done a lot of the work in the community and in the city," she said. "I've just seen Eric Garcetti really flourish and grow here in Los Angeles."

The lack of public interest ran counter to what's at stake. A key issue has been the city's shaky $7.7 billion budget and the prospect of living with less. Spending is projected to outpace revenue for years, and rising pension and retiree health care bills threaten money that could otherwise go to libraries, tree-trimming and street repairs. Villaraigosa urged his successor to try to block a 5.5 percent pay increase for civilian employees.

With so much common ground on policy, the race became a duel over character issues as well as a referendum on who was closer to politically powerful municipal unions often criticized for landing generous raises and benefits.

Garcetti's commercials labeled Greuel "DWP's mayor," a reference to the Department of Water and Power, whose workers financed ads to help install her at City Hall.

Greuel's attack ads hit Garcetti for a fundraiser organized by a developer who she says once served prison time for fraud.

Attacks in Iraq kill over 40, sectarian tensions high

By Kareem Raheem

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - A series of bomb and gun attacks across Iraq killed more than 40 people on Tuesday, a day after over 70 died in violence targeting majority Shi'ites that has stoked fears of all-out sectarian war with minority Sunnis.

Nearly 300 people have been killed in the past week as sectarian tensions, fuelled by the civil war in neighboring Syria, threaten to plunge Iraq back into communal bloodletting.

Ten years after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Iraq's Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds have yet to find a stable power-sharing deal and violence is again on the upswing.

In the biggest single incident on Tuesday, a car bomb exploded near a Sunni mosque in the Abu Ghraib area of western Baghdad killing 11 people and wounding 21, police and medics said.

"I heard a powerful bang and a fireball near the main gate of the mosque," said Uday Raheem, a policeman whose patrol was stationed near the mosque.

"We held back a while fearing a second explosion and then rushed to the blast location. The bodies of worshippers were scattered and some were shouting for help. bleeding to death."

Another bomb outside a cafe in the Doura district of southern Baghdad killed six more and wounded 18.

In Diyala province northeast of the capital, at least eight people, including two policemen, were killed in bombs and shootings, and in Kanaan, also to the northeast, two roadside bombs detonated in quick succession claiming three lives.

In the north of the country, three roadside bombs exploded near a livestock market in the ethnically-mixed city of Kirkuk, killing six people and shredding the bodies of humans and animals alike.

Mahmoud Jumaa, whose cousin was killed in the multiple bombings, appeared bewildered by their random nature.

"I heard the explosions, but never thought this place would be targeted since these animals have nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with sect, nothing to do with ethnicity or religion," he said.

Kirkuk is in a disputed oil-rich swathe of Iraq claimed both by the Shi'ite-dominated government in Baghdad and ethnic Kurds who run their own autonomous administration in the north.

Two car bomb blasts killed three people in a residential part of the town of Tuz Khurmato, also in the disputed area.

North of Baghdad, a suicide bomber killed three soldiers at a checkpoint in Tarmiya, police and medics said, and in Khalis gunmen broke into a house and killed and man and his wife, both of them Sunni Muslims.

The conflict in Syria, where mostly Sunni rebels are fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad, is turning in part into a regional proxy war between Sunni and Shi'ite powers.

Lebanon's Iranian-backed Shi'ite Hezbollah group is now openly fighting alongside Assad's forces, which are dominated by members of his minority Shi'ite-linked Alawite sect.

Iraq's Sunnis who resent their treatment by Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government have staged mass protests since December. Sunni militants, some of them linked to al Qaeda, have exploited the unrest, urging Sunnis to take up arms.

More than 700 people died violently in April, according to the United Nations, the highest monthly figure in almost five years. Iraq suffered a frenzy of Sunni-Shi'ite violence in 2006-07, when monthly death tolls sometimes topped 3,000.

Russia says two rebels killed in North Caucasus

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian security forces killed two suspected militants in the North Caucasus during a night-time sweep in the region plagued by an Islamist insurgency, investigators said on Tuesday.

A spokesman for local investigators said the men were killed in a gunbattle with officers after refusing to surrender during a raid on a house in a suburb of the capital of Ingushetia, a region to the west of Chechnya.

The wife and child of one of them left the house before the firefight, he told Reuters by telephone.

More than a decade after federal troops defeated a separatist rebellion in Chechnya, insurgents stage frequent attacks in nearby regions fighting to establish an emirate in the patchwork of mainly Muslim provinces on Russia's south.

Two car bombs killed at least four people and wounded dozens of others on Monday, in one of the bloodiest attacks this year, in capital of Dagestan, a province bordering Chechnya to the east.

The Kremlin is worried about the spread of violence outside the region. In a suburb of Moscow on Monday, security forces killed two suspected militants alleged to have been plotting an attack in the capital.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered law enforcement authorities to ensure insurgents do not attack the 2014 Winter Olympics next February in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, which is close to the North Caucasus.

Ireland rejects blame for Apple's low tax rate

By Conor Humphries and Padraic Halpin

CORK/DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland said on Tuesday it was not to blame for Apple Inc's low global tax payments and had no special rate deal with the company after the U.S. Senate said it paid little or no tax on tens of billions of dollars in profits stashed in Irish subsidiaries.

The Irish government, which has seen the luring of U.S. multinationals with low taxes as a key part of its economic policy since the 1960s, said its system was transparent and other countries were responsible if the tax rate paid by Apple was too low.

"They are issues that arise from the taxation systems in other jurisdictions, and that is an issue that has to be addressed first of all in those jurisdictions," deputy prime minister Eamon Gilmore told national broadcaster RTE on Tuesday.

In a 40-page memorandum released ahead of an appearance by Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook before Congress on Tuesday, a Senate subcommittee identified three subsidiaries that have no tax residency either in Ireland, where they are incorporated, or in the United States, where those companies are managed.

The main subsidiary, a holding company that includes Apple's retail stores throughout Europe, has not paid any corporate income tax in the last five years, the report said.

Apple's arrangement has allowed it to pay just 1.9 percent tax on its $37 billion in overseas profits in 2012, despite the fact that the average tax rate in the countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), its main markets, was 24 percent in 2012.

The report said "Ireland has essentially functioned as a tax haven for Apple".

Gilmore said Ireland was pursuing the issue of international tax avoidance "very strongly" at the European Union and the OECD, which is spearheading initiatives.

The issue will be discussed at a meeting of European Union officials on Tuesday, he said.

The Senate report said a subsidiary with a mailing address in Cork, Ireland's second-largest city, received $29.9 billion in dividends from lower-tiered offshore affiliates from 2009 to 2012, comprising 30 percent of Apple's global net profits.

It said it exploited a difference between Irish and U.S. tax residency rules.

"NO SPECIAL RATES"

Apple said in a comment posted online on Monday it did not use "tax gimmicks". It said the existence of its subsidiary Apple Operations International in Ireland did not reduce Apple's U.S. tax liability, and the company would pay more than $7 billion in U.S. taxes in fiscal 2013.

Apple shares were down 0.7 percent in early trading, underperforming the Nasdaq index.

A number of U.S. multinationals including web search leader Google, online retailer Amazon.com and coffee chain Starbucks have come under criticism for arranging their affairs in a way that leaves them liable to low rates of tax on billions of dollars of overseas sales.

Apple's auditor, Ernst & Young, which also audits Google and Amazon.com, declined immediate comment.

According to the congressional report, Apple's Tax Operations Head Phillip Bullock told the subcommittee that the company had obtained a special low tax rate through negotiations with the Irish government below the already low standard rate of 12.5 percent. Apple said this had been 2 percent or less for the last 10 years.

Ireland's European Affairs minister Lucinda Creighton denied any special rate agreement.

"There is no such deal. There is no deal for any company to pay 2 percent corporate tax in Ireland - that is erroneous," said Creighton, a barrister by profession.

A spokesman for Ireland's finance department said Ireland's tax system was statute based, so there was "no possibility of individual special tax rate deals for companies".

A spokeswoman for the Office of the Revenue Commissioners said she could not comment on individual cases as that would breach taxpayer confidentiality, but she also denied that the tax authority agreed special low tax rates with multinationals.

"All companies in Ireland pay the standard 12.5 percent rate on their trading profits arising in Ireland, and they pay a corporation tax rate of 25 percent on their Irish non-trading income," she said.

Unemployed Cork local Tom Falvey, 55, who got 10 weeks' work attaching cladding to the exterior of Apple's three-storey headquarters in the early 1990s, said Ireland's jobless would pay the price for any rise in taxes.

"The companies will just say 'take a jump' and move somewhere else more obliging. Our unemployment is high enough as it is," he said, as he walked his dog past the sprawling complex 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the city center.

A dozen or so casually dressed Apple workers, most in their 20s and 30s, who were smoking cigarettes outside the 1990s office building, said they could not talk to the press.

Alongside, builders are working on a sleek new glass and concrete extension. Michael Ambrose, a 58-year-old former construction worker walking by, said the government was powerless to get more tax out of Apple.

"We're a small country and feel we can't say no. We know they'll just go off to one of these Asian countries ... They're a law unto themselves."

FISCAL ATTRACTION

Apple said last year it would add 500 more people to its Cork workforce of 2,800.

Ireland's pro-business tax structures have attracted U.S. multinationals including Google, Microsoft and Facebook, big employers who have helped offset an unemployment rate stuck above 14 percent, but its low corporate tax rate of 12.5 percent has drawn criticism elsewhere in Europe.

The government regularly touts its success in attracting international investment as one of its main achievements, and multinationals, which account for almost 10 percent of Ireland's workforce, have taken the sting out of austerity measures prescribed under an EU/IMF bailout by creating jobs.

U.S. firms invested $30 billion in Ireland last year, more than in China and the rest of emerging Asia combined, according to the American Chamber of Commerce.

In the 1960s Ireland turned around its economy by attracting foreign businesses with tax holidays. After joining what later became the European Union, it was no longer able to do this and instead shifted to a system of low tax rates - currently 12.5 percent - and a light touch approach to tax administration that allows companies to reduce their effective rate much lower.

A raft of mainly U.S. companies have taken advantage of Ireland's tax regime to minimize their tax bills.

Microsoft's Irish base, along with another operation in low-tax Singapore, helped the company pay tax of just 9.4 percent on $21 billion of non-U.S. earnings last year. Google channels most of its overseas profits through Ireland, a practice that allowed it to pay tax at a rate of just 2.6 percent on $6 billion of foreign profits in 2012.

Patrick Coveney, the chief executive of Greencore, one of Ireland largest companies, told RTE radio that it was politicians across the world who were responsible for these tax treaties and tax structures.

"I find it frankly a little frustrating that it is them who are piling in and criticizing international traded businesses who are merely availing of the tax environment that they have put in place," said Coveney, a former president of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.

Wacom releases Bamboo Loop photo-sharing digital card app (video)

Bamboo releases Loop photosharing digital card app

Wacom's Bamboo line of products have always been far more whimsical and user-friendly than the rest of its professional offerings, and it's taken that a step further today with the introduction of the Bamboo Loop digital card app for iOS. Essentially, the app lets you doctor up a photo with graphics and different styles to create a greeting card of sorts that you can ship off to a friend. If you're on the receiving end of the card, you can scribble on it and "loop" it back to the sender -- sort of like a digital version of passing notes back and forth in class. Of course, you're free to upload your cards to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or Instagram too if you feel like sharing them with the world. The app itself is free, though you can cough up an extra $2 if you want to get additional style packs. It runs on iOS5 and higher, and you can download it from the iTunes store starting today. As for those on Android, hold tight, because Loop should be available to you as well pretty soon.

Syrian activists: Shelling near Lebanon kills 16

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? The Syrian military on Sunday launched an offensive to retake a strategic rebel-held town near the Lebanese border, a government official said, as activists reported that regime airstrikes and shelling of the town have killed at least 16 people, including opposition fighters.

The western Syrian town of Qusair, home to about 20,000 residents, has been besieged for weeks by government troops. According to opposition activists, members of the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group were fighting alongside President Bashar Assad's forces in the area. Hezbollah has been a staunch Assad ally throughout Syria's conflict.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 16 people, including rebel fighters, were killed before noon in Qusair but that the death toll was expected to rise as fierce fighting is underway and the military's operation intensifies.

Speaking over the telephone, a government official in Qusair said government forces have encircled the town, beefing up three offensive positions around it while leaving one "safe passage for fleeing civilians and the armed terrorists who want to surrender."

"The offensive to liberate Qusair has begun," the official told The Associated Press. He would not elaborate further, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Officials in Damascus were not immediately reachable for comment on the offensive. Assad's government and loyalists deny there is a civil war in the country but blame the conflict on "terrorists" ? a term they use for rebel fighters ? backed by a foreign conspiracy.

Qusair, close to the border with Lebanon and 164 kilometers (102 miles) northwest of the Syrian capital, is strategically important because it also links Damascus with Syria's Western coast, where regime loyalists are concentrated. This includes Alawites, followers of a Shiite offshoot to which the Assad family belongs. The rebellion against Assad is largely driven by Syria's majority Sunnis.

The push on Qusair may be an attempt by the regime to regain as much ground as possible before agreeing to any negotiations with the opposition in the wake of a recent U.S-Russian effort to get Assad and his opponents to negotiate an end to the country's civil war. Previous attempts to solve the conflict peacefully have failed.

The U.S.-Russian plan, similar to one set out last year in Geneva, calls for talks on a transition government and an open-ended cease-fire.

More than 70,000 people have been killed and several million displaced since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011 and escalated into a civil war.

On Saturday, Assad said in a newspaper interview that he won't step down before elections and that the United States has no right to interfere in his country's politics.

Assad's comments to the Argentine newspaper Clarin were the first about his political future since Washington and Moscow agreed earlier this month to try to bring the regime and the opposition to an international conference for talks about a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The U.S. and Russia have backed opposite sides in the conflict, but appear to have found common ground in the diplomatic push.

The White House and the Kremlin envision holding the meeting next month, but no date has been set. Neither Assad nor the Syrian National Coalition, the main Western-backed opposition coalition group, has made a firm commitment to attend.

In the interview, Assad seemed to play down the importance of such a conference, saying a decision on Syria's future is up to the Syrian people, not the U.S. He also said a decision on his political future must be made in elections, and not during such a conference.

"We said from the beginning that any decisions having to do with reform in Syria or any political doing is a local Syrian decision," Assad said. "Neither the U.S nor any other state is allowed to intervene in it. This issue is dealt with in Syria."

"That's why this possibility is determined by the Syrian people themselves; you go to the elections, you nominate yourself, there's a possibility you win and a possibility you don't," Assad added, hinting he might seek another term.

It?s simply not a case of ?one size fits all? when it comes to credit repairs, so there can be no guarantee of success.

The majority of new products include a warranty of between 90 and 360 days. If you are going to have a problem with your item, most likely it will occur during that time frame. An extended warranty is just a way to make more money.

Try using the automatic withdrawal plan at your bank so that you will automatically have money transferred into your savings account at regular intervals. This will help you pay yourself and start saving the money you need every month. This approach is ideal for anyone who expects to experience a special occasion in the near future.

Arrange an automatic withdrawal from checking to savings each month. This technique allows you to save a little money every month. By setting up a savings plan, you can save for a wedding or special vacation.

TIP! Your two largest purchases are likely to be the house you live in and your car. A huge factor of your budget each month will be not only the payments, but the interest rates of these things.

In most cases, automobiles and homes represent an individual?s most substantial purchases. It is important to set a large portion of cash aside for these expenses. You can pay them off faster if you add an extra payment or put any of your tax refund toward it.

You can save money by eliminating fast food stops for convenience. Fast food menus may seem cheap, but they really are not. Cooking at home with better quality ingredients produces better meals than you get at a fast food or carry out place, and also saves you a lot of money. You will also come to appreciate the art of cooking.

When items are on sale at the supermarket, you will not save money if you purchase more items than you can utilize. Stocking up on items you use regularly can save a lot of money, but only if you actually eat it all before it goes bad. Do not go overboard, then you will be able to enjoy a sale.

Holding a garage or yard sale can help one clear out some old items, as well as earning some extra cash. Those who make friends easily may be able to convince neighbors to let them sell their unwanted items for just a small fee. Using creativity, the possibilities are endless when it comes to garage sales.

TIP! If you eat less fast food or eat out less in general, you can save a lot of money. By buying the needed ingredients and cooking meals at home, one is going to learn to appreciate the effort that it takes to prepare a meal at home for oneself.

If somebody is thinking about getting something that costs too much they may want to ask their family to help them out. Pooling resources to make a purchase for the entire family, can help everyone save some cash.

Your money management may weigh more heavily on your mind if you have children. You can make your income go further and take better care of the people who rely on you by making use of good personal finance advice whenever you come across it.

Beatles guitar auctioned off to tune of $408,000

This custom-made electric guitar played by the late John Lennon and George Harrison of the Beatles recently sold at auction.

A custom-made electric guitar played by the late John Lennon and George Harrison of the Beatles sold at a New York auction on Saturday for $408,000, said officials with the company behind the event.

The semi-hollow-body guitar, manufactured by the VOX company, was sold to an unidentified U.S. buyer at the "Music Icons" event organized by Beverly Hills, California-based Julien's Auctions and held at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manhattan.

Julien's said previously it expected the guitar, which was the centerpiece of Saturday's sale, to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000.

Harrison played the instrument, distinguished by two symmetrical flared shoulders on the upper body, while practicing "I Am The Walrus," and Lennon used it in a video session for the song "Hello, Goodbye," according to a statement from Julien's Auctions.

Both songs were on the Beatles' 1967 album "Magical Mystery Tour."

The VOX guitar was a prototype instrument custom-built for Lennon in 1966, said Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's. Lennon gave the VOX guitar as a gift in 1967 to Yanni "Magic Alex" Mardas, who was the electronics engineer for the band's Apple Records label, the auction house said.

The instrument, displayed in recent weeks at a museum in Ireland before the sale, was sold a few years ago by Christie's Auction House for a little over $100,000. Nolan said the latest buyer, who sent a representative to Saturday's auction to bid on his behalf, wished to remain anonymous.

Lennon was shot to death in New York in 1980 by a deranged fan, and Harrison died of lung cancer in Los Angeles in 2001. The surviving members of the Beatles are Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

How to Use Zero-Turn Mowers Effectively and Safely

Slopes

The operator's manuals for all of the machines we tested recommend the mowers not be operated up and down slopes greater than 10 degrees (the Deere manual says 13 degrees, provided the mower is not being operated with an attachment such as a bagger). Manufacturers studiously avoid any mention of side-slope mowing. Good, conservative advice. Steeper slopes should either be mowed with a walk mower or landscaped so there is no grass to mow.

If you're already using a tractor to mow a lawn with a steeper slope than what's recommended, you may not have the same experience with a ZTR mower. These machines are rear-heavy. Generally, 75 percent of their weight is in the back, where the engine is, while 25 percent is in the front. Also, ZTR mowers don't steer with their front wheels, which are caster types. In fact, a ZTR can lose the ability to steer properly downhill because of wet grass, ruts, or washboard surfaces.

You may find that compared to the tractor that you're used to using, a ZTR mower will be easier to drive up a slope.

Check you lawn's slope by buying an inexpensive pitch-and-angle reader ($7 to $10). Place the device on a straight edge or a level and press it firmly into the grass. Here's the one we use.

Other Obstacles

You can get hurt operating any kind of mowing equipment. The best advice is to stay alert and be aware of where you are relative to obstacles.

Water: Stay at least one mower's width away from the edge of ponds or streams when operating riding equipment. Again, steep slopes are particularly hazardous because they can cause a mower to overturn to the side or flip backward.

Retaining walls and other drop-offs: While concentrating on getting the lawn mowed, it's easy to forget where you are and get hurt. Mow with extreme caution near retaining walls, ditches, steep swales, or the drop-off where a culvert runs under a lawn. If possible, stay well back from these areas and cut around them with a push mower.

Curbs: Landscape contractors often bang a zero-turn mower over curbs in their race to finish the job. Don't do it. This can wreck a residential mower faster than you can say "gouged mower deck."

Mailbox posts, light posts, trees: Because ZTR mowers afford extreme maneuverability, it's all too easy to mow right to the edge. Bad idea. One slip and you'll bang the mower deck against the object. Light posts and mailbox posts are particularly prone to damage this (and from string trimmers, by the way).

Avoiding Lawn Damage

Take a test drive: Before taking a new mower out on the lawn, drive it around on your driveway first. Practice going straight, making curves, backing up, and turning around without squealing the tires.

Avoiding lawn gouges: Any self-propelled mowing equipment?from a walk mower to a tractor to a ZTR mower?can gouge a lawn. Prevent this by avoiding sharp, angular turns; pivoting the mower in place; or rotating the mower by spinning one wheel forward and one wheel in reverse. Instead, as you come to the end of the row, slowly reverse a ZTR and swing the mower into the next row, then go forward in a maneuver somewhat like making a K turn in a car. If you do this correctly, you don't have to swing one lap bar all the way forward and one back, causing the tires to counter-rotate. All it requires is that you move one lap bar all the way back to reverse the mower and then move both levers forward to go forward and cut the next row.

Reverse mowing: You'll reverse-mow in order to avoid lawn damage, but remember that you should never reverse without looking behind you. Obviously, children and pets should be kept inside while you mow.

Safety Gear

Eye protection: There's no need to wear cumbersome eye protection. A standard wraparound pair of safety glasses is all you need. This protects you from debris thrown by a mower blade that could bounce off a house, shed, or fence, or from the grass clippings that can blow around and irritate your eyes.

Hearing protection: Use foam squeeze-in earplugs or earmuff-style hearing protection.

By Ros Krasny WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A potentially fatal hog virus, porcine epidemic diarrhea, has been found in the United States for the first time, government and private industry officials said on Friday, posing a new threat for the country's struggling pork producers. PEDV, an incurable condition that causes diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration in hogs, has been identified in Iowa, the largest producing state, and possibly beyond. The severity of the outbreak is not yet known. The virus exists in much of the world but has not previously occurred in the western hemisphere. ...

The winner of 'American Idol' is ...

TV

FOX

Candice Glover and Kree Harrison battled it out for the title of "American Idol."

The third time proved to be the charm for Candice Glover, as she was crowned the ?American Idol? season 12 champion on Thursday over Kree Harrison.

For Candice, who auditioned in season nine and season 11 but failed to make the live shows both times, her face showed a mixture of redemption, joy and relief. She broke down closing the show with ?I Am Beautiful,? her debut single, but she can surely expect a lot of iTunes pre-orders anyway.

Before that, she got to display her vocal power one last time in her finale duet with Jennifer Hudson. That performance illustrated why Candice won. She made it very easy for everyone to see the type of singer she could become, and the pairing of the two was one of the most inspired in ?Idol? finale history, which, to be sure, is not lavish praise.

It?s also important to note that even Jennifer Hudson was not the vocal behemoth she is now back when she was an ?Idol? hopeful in season three. She grew tremendously after being voted off the show, and Candice?s task is to develop at a similar level now that she?s the champion.

Kree, meanwhile, performed her own celebrity duet with Keith Urban, and while it was enjoyable to watch, it illustrated her drawback. She has a very compelling story and is a talented singer. It would not have been an outrage had she won. But it was also less apparent what kind of singer she wanted to be. Is she country? Soul? Pop? Sometimes it seemed like she wasn?t sure herself, and the fact that Ryan Seacrest didn?t give his usual ?only a handful of votes separated the finalists? speech may have indicated that it wasn?t that close.

As usual, the final ?Idol? episode of the season was a night of random pairings and guest stars, the bells and whistles that remind the audience how dull all the other results shows were in comparison. Some of the matchups worked (Angie Miller and Adam Lambert singing ?Titanium?). Some of them didn?t (Angie and Jessie J). The boys got to sing live with Frankie Valli. The girls got Aretha Franklin as their singing partner, but only via satellite hookup from New York. Janelle Arthur got to sing with The Band Perry, and Amber Holcomb with Emeli Sande.

Original judge Randy Jackson received a send-off with a short video tribute that reminded everyone how much fresher the show was a decade ago when Simon Cowell looked a little scruffier and Randy hadn?t yet work his catchphrases into the ground. Another video short blamed sabotage from the girls and Jordin Sparks for the quick exit of the male finalists, and featured a random dig at ?The Voice? as well as acknowledgement that none of the male finalists played the guitar as the last five winners did might have been a factor in their defeat this season. Other clips allowed the contestants to made fun of the judges, and served as the usual highlights montage of ?oh, yeah, I remember THAT? moments.

Meanwhile, all the judges got to perform live onstage ? except Nicki Minaj. (Well, and perhaps Mariah Carey, given what looked like a miserable lip-synching effort on her part.) Even Jennifer Lopez got to strut her stuff, and she?s just an ex-judge. Viewerss also saw Randy play the bass, but not Nicki singing ?Super Bass.? (It doesn?t take a soothsayer to note that?s not a good sign for the chances of her returning.)

But give ?Idol? some credit: Unlike in past years, they did not bring back terrible auditions to serve as punch lines one more time. Although, Lazaro Arbos was chewing his gum with such fury on stage that maybe he was supposed to fill that role.

Now begins an uncertain offseason for ?Idol,? with major changes likely to come. But in the meantime, the show?s executives can rest easy knowing that it wound up with the right champion in season 12.

What did you think of the results? Will you be buying Candice's debut album? Share your thoughts in the comments!

No Powerball winner; jackpot soars to $475 million

The jackpot for the latest drawing on Wednesday, May, 15, 2013, has ballooned to an estimated $360 million, with a cash value of $229.2 million, making it the third largest Powerball jackpot and the seventh largest jackpot ever. FILE - This Nov. 28, 2012, file photo shows a customer at a 7-Eleven convenience store with a Powerball ticket in Tampa, Fla. The jackpot for the latest drawing on Wednesday, May, 15, 2013, has ballooned to an estimated $360 million, with a cash value of $229.2 million, making it the third largest Powerball jackpot and the seventh largest jackpot ever. (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, File)

(AP) ? So you didn't win Wednesday's $360 million Powerball jackpot? Make that you and everyone else.

A message early Thursday on the multistate lottery's website said the jackpot has soared to $475 million after none of the ticket sold matched all the winning numbers in Wednesday night's drawing: 2, 11, 26, 34, 41 and a Powerball of 32.

The next drawing will be held Saturday.

A jackpot of $475 million ranks as the second largest in Powerball history and third biggest overall.

Lottery officials expect jackpot totals of this size to continue to climb in shorter amounts of time, thanks in part to a game redesign in January 2012 that increased the odds of winning some kind of prize, but also lowered the possible number combinations to win the Powerball.

There's also "cross-selling" of Powerball and Mega Millions tickets ? states being able to sell both Powerball tickets and Mega Millions tickets ? that began in January 2010. As a result, large jackpots will continue to surpass all-time jackpot records set years ago, said Mary Neubauer, spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery. Iowa is one of the founding Powerball states.

"It usually took a handful of months, if not several months, for a jackpot to reach this large amount," she said. "Now it's achieving that within a handful of weeks. I think the redesign is achieving exactly what we had wanted it to achieve, which is the bigger, faster-growing jackpot."

The redesign means players don't necessarily have to strike big to get lucky. A $1 increase and new $1 million and $2 million prizes means the odds of winning something have increased. Just last Saturday, there was no Powerball jackpot winner, but more than a dozen tickets won $1 million prizes in 10 states.

In fact, more than half of the all-time jackpot records have been reached in the last three years. The top two all-time jackpots ? $656 million from a Mega Millions jackpot and $587.5 million from a Powerball jackpot ? were achieved in 2012.

The last major jackpot win came when a New Jersey man won a $338.3 million jackpot on March 23. It is now considered the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in history.

Players aren't complaining about the large sums. That just gets them thinking.

"I'd hire someone to tell me what to do with the money," said R.J. Konyek, 36, an engineer for Union Pacific in Omaha, Neb. "I'd definitely be up for the challenge (of spending the jackpot)."

Insurance agent Joe Williams, of Middleton, Wis., is trying like so many others to get lucky with Powerball. He won $500 several years ago and now wants to score a little higher. Williams doesn't necessarily spend more when the prize is high. But his $4 investment in the quick-pick option means he does spend.

"I know rationally it makes no sense," he said. "But at the same time, without a ticket, I have zero chance."

Ervin Torok, a truck driver from Sioux Falls, S.D., also is looking for his second chance. He won a $500 prize a few years back.

"You never know," Torok, 52, said while checking some lottery tickets from a gas station. "Maybe one day you'll get lucky and win."

Tom Powers, 52, a janitor from Omaha, Neb., bought several tickets Tuesday from a convenience store. He said he would definitely walk away from work if he won the jackpot, but he's not sure how he would spend all the winnings.

"It's really unfathomable the amount of money this is putting out," Powers said.
