That being said, I don't think I'd like to write a whole novel as 'tandem writing' in a sense that you write one paragraph, they write one paragraph etc. It might work if you sat down and plotted things out beforehand, but I can see it getting rather unplotted if you're just setting off with another person and seeing where is goes, as you can't really plot ahead for characters in the way that you can as an RPer.
I do like having another person to bounce ideas off though, it makes projects much easier to push along when someone else is also motivated towards it, and also gives you an opportunity to get your ideas critiqued from the top and work out if things 'sound better in your head' by bouncing them off another person.
Similarly RPing is something I use from time to time to see if a character 'works', if they're likeable. Some that I've thought work don't, some that I was unsure about have been really well received. It's a good way to try things out, IMO.
