Some books and films about Rome

Rome is my favorite city in the world, I could happily live and die there,?I think. Unfortunately I do not live in Rome, but in the Netherlands instead, and I have to content myself with visiting Rome almost every year. I?will be going to Rome?very soon, and I just love the fact that I will be going back home, because that?is what Rome feels like to me.
Just for now, here are a couple of great books and films to get you into the mood for the Eternal City: Rome.

History
Rubicon, Tom Holland,
a really good account of the history of Rome, told by somebody who obviously knows what he is talking about. Full of rich details and anecdotes this is one of the best books about the ancient history of Rome you can find.

Rome, Robert Hughes
From the humble beginnings on 7 hills to a city that dominated the ancient world, to the decline when the Roman empire fell and back again to being an important city because of the Papal seat, the Renaisscance and the baroque.
Robert Hughes loves Rome, and this books shows that very well.

Ancient Rome on 5 denarii a day, Philip Matyszak
This great book is like a travelguide for ancient Rome. It tells you how you can travel to Rome, what to expect when you sleep in a Roman inn, the different kinds of food there are, what you can do for sightseeing, entertainment and relexation. It it full of colourful facts and it is very funny. There is a list with handy frases in Latin for your trip, so you can learn to say things like 'Do I loke fat in this tunic?' and 'please, don't rob me'.

Novels
A perfect day, Melania Mazzucco
This great novel by Italian author Melania Mazzucco is the story of different characters in Rome whose paths will cross during the day. It is beautiful, and thrilling.

DVD
Romanzo Criminale (the series)
Michele Placido already directed a film about this book, but later a series was also made. In this series they have 2x 12 episodes to tell the story. It is the story of three friends, who grew up in a poor neighbourhood in Rome. They formed a criminal gang and during the seventies they ruled Rome. Only when you are as big as that, other parties also want to get involved. The maffia, the police and even the secret service were after them.

Aurelio Zen
Rufus Sewell (don;t you just love him!) plays?Aurelio Zen, an police inspector in Rome. Only three episodes were made, but they are amazing. Zen is an honest man, but he needs to get very creative sometimes to bring the cases to a fair end. Rome is the perfect background for this series.

Of course, there are many more examples, but I had to make a selection. But don't worry, I am sure I will tell more about Rome in the future!
