Survey of early English education in Japan

Survey of early English education in Japan

NHK -- Jul 08

A nationwide survey by the Eiken Foundation of Japan shows more than 70 percent of elementary schools are experiencing difficulties. 1,309 schools responded to the survey conducted last December. English language education was made compulsory in Japanese elementary schools in 2011.

24 percent of respondents said the introduction of English was going smoothly. That's 12 percentage points less than in an earlier survey.

74 percent said there are issues that need to be addressed. That's up 11 points.

Eiken foundation officials said teachers feel puzzled and burdened, while also feeling a certain level of effectiveness in teaching English. They say there is a need for a more efficient method of teaching.
